Step-by-Step Guide to Using Hemp Shield Deck Finish

Are you planning to apply Hemp Shield Deck Finish to make your deck look more lively and beautiful? If yes, then you would need some help, and we are here to provide you with just that.

In this blog post, let us share with you a step-by-step guide to using Hemp Shield Deck Finish correctly on your deck.

About Hemp Shield Deck Finish

Hemp Shield Deck Finish is a water-based hemp oil product made to penetrate the wood deeply to avoid any peeling or cracking. It provides you with lasting results that will keep your deck beautiful and protected from rot or algae. If you want to breathe new life into your deck and bring out the color of the wood, Hemp Shield Deck Finish is the way to do it.

Phase 1: Prepare the Surface of the Deck

The first step is to prepare the surface of your deck for the finish.

Step 1: Clean all the dirt, mildew, loose wood fibers, and any such matter from the surface of the wood.

Step 2: Make sure it is completely dry and the structure is intact.

Step 3: Check that the wood moisture content is below 15% (roughly the same as kiln-dried lumber) or that the surface has been exposed to dry weather for 3 to 5 days.

Step 4: If the wood was previously stained or has weathered, be sure to sand and scrub to remove the loose wood fibers, grime, mildew, chalky remains, and waxes from the wood.

Step 5: Remove any remaining finish from the previous treatment so that the finish penetrates properly.

Phase 2: Apply Hemp Shield Deck Finish

You can apply Hemp Shield Deck Finish using a nylon/polyester bristle brush or foam brush. You can also use a roller or traditional airless sprayers.

Find more information about the specifications of the brushes on the product page.

Before applying, remember that different types of wood will need different amounts of Hemp Shield Deck Finish. The species, porosity, cell structure, rate of growth, weathering, age, and other environmental factors will tell you how much is needed.

Note: Do not apply the finish at the end of the day because dew or condensation can form. Also, avoid applying when rain is a possibility.

Step 1: Stir the Hemp Shield Deck Finish properly before applying.

Step 2: If the surface is too hot to touch, don’t apply, or there is a chance of lapping. Instead, you can use a very light mist of water. Use only enough to tighten the grain on the surface. This way, you can avoid lapping.

Step 3: If the temperature of the surface, product, and air is between 50°F (10°C) minimum, 100°F (37°C) maximum, and at least 5° above the dew point, you can start applying the finish.

  • Apply only when the relative humidity is less than 85%
  • Don’t apply if the moisture content is more than 15% or the surface is wet or feels wet to the touch.

Step 4: While applying, do not thin out the product. Use it with the consistency it came with to get the best result. Apply the finish continuously from one end of a plank to the other.

Step 5: Apply only as much as needed. Too much application can lead to uneven drying, discoloration, surface residue, and peeling. Hemp Shield Deck Finish will look milky at first but will thicken and become clear as it penetrates.

Step 6: Once the Hemp Shield has cleared, remove any excess material with a rag, dry brush, or roller.

Hemp Shield Deck Finish does not work the same as other wood protectors. It does not form a urethane or acrylic shell over the wood’s surface. The hybrid waterborne hemp oil in our finish penetrates the wood, working from within to protect and nourish your outdoor wood.
