How to Prepare Your Wood Surface

Step 1: Clean the Surface

• Remove dirt, mildew, and loose wood fibers.
• Ensure moisture content is below 15% (let dry for 3-5 days if needed).
• Sand or scrub weathered, stained, or pressure-treated wood to remove any coatings. We recommend using our Wood Cleaner to ensure removal of any mildew and debris.
• Avoid applying over glossy finishes – remove previous coatings using our Finish remover.

Step 2: Mildew Removal

If your wood has mildew, clean it using this mixture:

• We recommend using our biodegradable Wood Cleaner concentrate to remove any Mildew and restore the wood before application of stain & sealer.

Deck Stain Coverage & Application Instructions

• Coverage: 1 gallon wood sealer and log home treatment covers 450 to 650 sq. ft. (varies by wood type, age, and porosity).
• Ideal Temperature: Apply when temperatures are between 50°F – 100°F (10°C – 37°C) and relative humidity is below 85%.
• Avoid Application: When rain is expected or in direct sunlight to prevent uneven drying.

How to Apply Deck Stain

• Brush Application: Use a nylon/polyester bristle brush or foam brush.
• Roller Application: Use a 1/8″ – 3/8″ nap synthetic roller cover.
• Sprayer Application:

1. Airless Sprayer: 2000 PSI, Tip: .013 – .017
2. Conventional Sprayer: 40-60 PSI, Fluid Pressure: 20 PSI, Tip: 704/FX

• Do not over-apply! Excess stain can cause uneven drying, discoloration, and peeling.
• Stain appears milky during application but clears as it penetrates.
• Immediately wipe off any excess stain with a dry brush, double end stain applicator, roller, or absorbent cloth.

Special Instructions for Over-Water & High Humidity Areas

For decks, docks, or humid environments:

• Seal all edges, ends, and drilled screw holes before assembly.
• Apply continuously along the plank for even coverage.
• Ensure proper penetration to prevent tannin stains.

Safety Precautions & Clean-Up

• Lead Warning: If removing old paint, avoid lead dust exposure. Use an NIOSH-approved respirator and clean with a HEPA vacuum or wet mop.
• First Aid: In case of skin or eye contact, rinse with water immediately. If inhaled, seek fresh air. Do not induce vomiting if swallowed—call a doctor immediately.
• Clean-Up: Mix 1-2 teaspoons of “Ivory” soap with 1 gallon of water. Clean tools immediately after use.
• Prevent Spontaneous Combustion: Soak used rags in a water-filled, closed metal container.
